My sweet children sent me on a "treasure hunt" through my house last Saturday after a long Thanksgiving week. Though I was hardly in the mood, I followed the clues up and down the stairs - only to find that they had planned an early birthday surprise for me with tickets to see Michael W. Smith in concert at Bass Hall on Monday. Roy and I enjoyed an evening in downtown Fort Worth with dinner at P.F. Chang's, followed by the concert. As we went to our seats, there was a young boy and his father looking for their seats at the same time and we ended up next to each other. We started with the normal chit-chat and then the conversation got serious. The little boy had been adopted at 9 months old, and was addicted to cocaine due to his mother's drug abuse during her pregnancy. He developed severe kidney disease and went on to have a kidney transplant at 5 years old. Yes, that is a LOT of information, but I really believe the Lord sat us there for a reason. This dad needed someone to talk to. This little boy was so excited - he sat on the edge of his seat and when MWS came out, he got the biggest grin on his face. His dad had explained that from an early age, he had connected with Michael's music and listened to it through the whole ordeal. Some church friends knew of this and purchased the tickets for them.
Most of the first half of the concert was Christmas music - after all, it was a Christmas concert! Roy and I enjoyed watching him enjoy himself so much! Then, MWS began to sing a few of his favorites. The little boy would just get so excited! (no, I didn't even get his name) MWS began to tell of how the "next song" had become somewhat of a universal anthem and that everywhere he had gone in the past year, audiences would sing every word to the song. Of course, I thought it was "Friends". But, it wasn't. When the recorded part of the song began, and you hear rain, the little boy teared up. Then, he sang EVERY WORD of the song. The lyrics to "Healing Rain" seemed to almost be the story of this family's life. When the song was over, he looked over at me and smiled and said..."I love that song".
Sometime near the end of the show, he and his dad left and we didn't even get to say goodbye, or nice talking to you.
I will never forget getting to go to that concert...Michael W. Smith is one of my very favorites!!! But, I will also remember the brief encounter I had with a very special little boy. He had a profound effect on my life...
May God blessings be yours...

Mindy,
Thank so much for the sweet note you left on my blog! It has been a joy getting to know you through the years too, and I am so excited that you are going to take over my job at church. You are doing such a great job already, and I can see how God is going to use your creativity, your sweet spirit, and your enthusiasm to bless a lot of kids, as well as our children's ministry team! It's been so fun to come to work and know you'll be there in my little hole with me! Happy Birthday-- I'll see you Monday!
