Just a closer walk with thee...
As I get older, there are more and more things that I just cannot remember. But one thing that seems to stick with me are the words to old hymns - sung in church services, funerals, to my grandparents in the nursing home - places like that. Last week, we had our annual "family get-together" over July 4th weekend in Glen Rose, Texas. My parents always host such a great gathering! On the Saturday evening before the 4th, my parents treated those of us who were there to a meal at "2 Grannies" on the square. Now, if you have not been there, plan a trip...NOW! It is home cooking at its finest, a REAL hug from the grannies when you walk in, and some truly great gospel singing. And you don't have to be a great singer! They even got ME up there! Wow - talk about bringing back some old memories. And then we made some new memories when Melissa Jo, resident princess of the family (aged 5), got up and sang "Jesus Loves Me". What a moment! Then on Monday, before our first excessively large meal of the day, my dad requested that we sing a song before we had the prayer for our food. He chose "Victory in Jesus", because that is one of our very favorites. There were about 35+ of us there and even the little ones joined in. What a memory! As I thought about that sweet moment later in the week, I also thought about my granny, who suffers from very aggressive Alzheimer's - even on her worst day, you can start singing "Victory in Jesus", and she joins right in. No matter what this old world may do to our bodies, nothing can take away the comfort of the words of those "old hymns" and the promises they remind us of. And what better song to sing to my sleeping grandson, Jack, than one that shares the greatest promise of all! May your day be blessed!
